Recently, I had a conversation with my boss at work, he said and I quote “In a time of striking disaster, fear at times kills people even more than the disaster itself”. Citing the Lagos explosion years ago as an instance, he said many people died from the fear created by the explosion. A Proverb says “He who fears something gives it power over him”
As we all know, there is an outbreak of a certain virus called COVID-19 (Corona Virus). It is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Common symptoms include fever, cough and shortness of breath. Muscle pain, sputum production and sore throat are less common. While the majority of cases result in mild symptoms, some progress to severe pneumonia and multi organ failure. The virus is spread between people primarily via respiratory droplets produced during coughing. These droplets can also be produced from sneezing and normal exhalation, and the virus may spread from touching contaminated surfaces and then touching one’s face.
Originating from China, The outbreak was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei, China, in December 2019, and was recognized as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on the 11th of March 2020. The disease has so far spread to almost every nooks and crannies causing fear, panic in the hearts of people. this has led to people labeling this as a sign of end time. As of 20 March 2020, the rate of deaths per number of diagnosed cases is 4.1%; however, it ranges from 0.2% to 15% depending on age and health complications of the host carrying the virus
Efforts to prevent the virus spreading include travel restrictions, quarantine, curfews, event postponements and cancellations, and facility closures. The pandemic has led to global socioeconomic disruption, it has even paralyzed sporting and cultural activities throughout the world leading to various activities being postponed or canceled.
This Virus has spread to about 87% (169 Countries) of the countries of the world and reaching all the continents of the world bar Antarctica. Making its mark known all over, as at the time of this publication there are over 303,000 reported cases of this virus and unsurprisingly it is predominant in China (over 81,000 cases), Italy (Over 53,000), Spain (Over 25,000), USA (Over 24,000), Germany (Over 22,000), Iran (Over 20,000), France (Over 14,000).
Surprisingly, the number of deaths as a result of this virus in Italy is the highest; recording close to 5,000 deaths. This is due to the fact that Italy has a higher population of older people. [And older people and those with underlying medical problems like high blood pressure, heart problems or diabetes, are more likely to develop serious illness]. China coming in closely with over 3,000 deaths, Spain (Over 1000 deaths), USA; precisely 291 deaths, Iran (1556 deaths); Taking the counts of death to close to 13,000. The first confirmed death was on 9 January 2020 in Wuhan, and the first death outside China was in Philippines on the 1st of February 2020.
As of yet, there isn’t a known cure, neither is there a vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for COVID-19. Management involves treatment of symptoms, supportive care, isolation, and experimental measures. Out of the over 302,000 cases, there has been over 95,000 recovery cases so far.
Medical personnel across the world are running a race against time to provide a credible answer in form of cure and vaccine to the question of this notorious COVID-19.
